Most of the numerous heavy metal mines in Kyrgyzstan have been abandoned when the Soviet empire expired. At the request of the authorities and in close cooperation with the Coordination Group for Uranium Legacy Sites (CGULS) managed by the International Atomic Energy Commission (IAEA), FSD has conducted an Environmental Impact Assessment of the former lead and zinc mine in Sumsar since 2015. FSD is planning a follow-up project in support of the population living in this remote region to educate the children about the risks of contamination and to reduce the flow of polluted mine water through the village.
