A country marked by years of conflict and instability<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Numerous internal and cross-border conflicts have left Ethiopia heavily contaminated by landmines and explosive remnants of war, scattered across several regions, particularly Afar, Tigray, Amhara and Somali. In some areas, violence is ongoing and continues to limit humanitarian access, while needs for water, medical care and adequate shelter remain significant. At the same time, the extent of contaminated land and the presence of large quantities of unexploded ordnance make clearance operations particularly complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Protecting communities through risk education<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With the support of private donors, FSD is operating in Tigray in partnership with the local organisation EPSS to deliver explosive ordnance risk education sessions. These activities primarily target children, who account for more than 60% of accident victims in the country. During these sessions, participants receive practical information on how to recognise dangerous items, adopt safe behaviours, avoid high-risk areas and report suspicious objects. Activities are designed to be culturally appropriate, accessible in local languages, and adapted to the needs of vulnerable populations. These sessions are conducted in schools, villages and public spaces across the region, where contamination remains widespread. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While clearance operations are ongoing, risk education remains the most effective way to reduce the threat faced by local communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FSD\u2019s mine action programme in Ethiopia is funded by private donors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
