In the 1990s,\u00a0millions of people saw on their TV screens images of countries contaminated by anti-personnel mines\u00a0and their dramatic effects on the population. FSD\u2019s activities began via Swiss radio. An appeal was launched to offer training to refugees so that they could contribute to the demining of their countries.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>FSD\u2019s first mine action project began a few months later in Bosnia-Herzegovina. It involved clearing a part of the Olympic village of Dobrinja, where the front line ran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FSD then extended its mine clearance activities to other countries, notably at the request of the World Food Programme, leading to an agreement in 2001. It specified that\u00a0FSD\u2019s emergency response teams are on standby within 72 hours to ensure emergency food distribution\u00a0to the civilian population in any potentially mined area. Large-scale operations are carried out in heavily contaminated countries such as Albania, Lebanon, Laos and Sri Lanka. Currently, FSD is active in Afghanistan, Colombia, Iraq, the Philippines, the Central African Republic, Tajikistan, Chad and Ukraine.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Specialised in emergency situations, FSD\u2019s field teams occasionally carry out humanitarian activities that go beyond mine action, such as in the aftermath of the tsunami in Sri Lanka in 2004. Today, FSD is working closely with the Urs Endress Foundation on the FindMine Project, which aims to develop a drone that can detect explosive remnants of war using ground penetrating radar.\u00a0<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>FSD was also involved in research projects on the use of drones in mine action since 2008.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the list of FSD\u2019s operations in countries expands, new activities complementing mine action are being implemented.\u00a0Local capacity-building programmes were conducted in several countries,\u00a0including Mozambique and Armenia. In 2009, a programme to destroy obsolete stocks of obsolete weapons and ammunition was launched in Tajikistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FSD operates in challenging contexts, where the population\u2019s needs are not limited to mine clearance. The organisation therefore moved in step with the direction of the SDGs and the humanitarian development peace nexus.\u00a0An environmental remediation programme was launched in 2012 in Kyrgyzstan, starting with assessments of soil pollution levels deriving from extractive mines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FSD then carried out several projects to clean up former uranium mining sites in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, and has focused on the remediation of sites contaminated by toxic pesticides since 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img wpfc-lazyload-disable=\"true\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"585\" src=\"https:\/\/fsd.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/weapons-and-ammuniton-disposal-operations-in-tajikistan-1024x585.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1240\" style=\"width:400px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fsd.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/weapons-and-ammuniton-disposal-operations-in-tajikistan-1024x585.png 1024w, https:\/\/fsd.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/weapons-and-ammuniton-disposal-operations-in-tajikistan-300x171.png 300w, https:\/\/fsd.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/weapons-and-ammuniton-disposal-operations-in-tajikistan-768x439.png 768w, https:\/\/fsd.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/weapons-and-ammuniton-disposal-operations-in-tajikistan-1536x878.png 1536w, https:\/\/fsd.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/weapons-and-ammuniton-disposal-operations-in-tajikistan-2048x1170.png 2048w, https:\/\/fsd.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/weapons-and-ammuniton-disposal-operations-in-tajikistan.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Since the beginning of the obsolete weapons and ammunition destruction programme in Tajikistan, more than 1.7 million weapons and ammunition have been destroyed by FSD, as well as some 50 man-portable air-defence systems (MANPADs).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, projects to assist ongoing peace processes took shape. FSD experts trained and mentored the staff of the local NGO Shareteah Humanitarian Organization (SHO).
