Myanmar (Burma)
A long-standing conflict
Since gaining independence in 1948, Burma has been marked by almost continuous internal conflict. Landmines have been widely used to control territory, causing frequent fatal accidents and forcing thousands of people to flee their homes.
Support for internally displaced people and strengthening of local demining capacities
Between 2013 and 2014, FSD, in partnership with a national organisation, provided emergency assistance in camps for displaced people across four provinces, including the construction of shelters and the distribution of hygiene kits. Explosive ordnance risk education sessions were also delivered in these camps to help prevent accidents.
At the same time, FSD supported the development of national mine action standards and trained the staff of the national authority in their implementation.
For nearly 30 years, FSD has been working to make land safer. Explore the key milestones of our humanitarian work since our first demining operation in 1998.
