In Ukraine, thousands of former soldiers injured in combat face the challenge of reintegrating into civilian life. FSD is contributing to a reintegration project through humanitarian demining, organised by the United Nations Development Programme and the Ukrainian Ministry of Economy.
“The head of the veterans’ centre encouraged me to give it a try. I was fortunate to be among the twelve people selected, and I am proud to be part of this effort.”
Oleksandr, veteran and humanitarian demining trainee
The aim of the programme is to train participants in humanitarian demining techniques adapted to their health conditions, such as the use of drones and remote-controlled machines, while addressing the urgent need for qualified humanitarian deminers.
“Training veterans in humanitarian demining has tremendous potential. There are many opportunities regarding the roles they can take on and the work they can accomplish.”
Eleanor Porritt, FSD Country Director in Ukraine
With one-third of the country contaminated by landmines and explosive remnants of war, the need for demining is substantial. Through the specialised training provided by FSD, Oleksandr and eleven other veterans have gained skills in operating drones, ground preparation machines, and detectors, contributing to humanitarian demining efforts. “This programme represents an opportunity for me to reintegrate, acquire new skills, and find a new purpose”, Oleksandr concludes.
