In a post conflict environment, humanitarian organisations help to provide vital services and protection to a country’s population; this then transitions to longer term development activities. But the transition can take time. FSD’s unique experience operating across both the humanitarian and development spectrums in mine action and in post conflict environments allows FSD’s team to bridge this aid gap.
FSD’s team in Central African Republic delivers a number of critical support activities to provide peace and security in a fragile post-conflict country that is still recovering from internal fighting, against a backdrop of under development and poverty in many areas. In February 2019, CAR signed a peace agreement with the help of the European Union, the United Nations and the African Union which brought together 14 armed groups to lay down their weapons and agree to cooperate in jointly bringing desperately needed peace and security across the country. FSD, funded by the European Union, provides critical infrastructure rehabilitation, logistic support, and basic administrative functions to support the jointly formed peace teams. This enables the country to change from a fragmented state, with widespread instability, to a more stable and prosperous society and gives communities and families security and hope for future development.
The last 18 months have witnessed a regeneration and rehabilitation of the community and infrastructure for security forces and their families in CAR; this helps to create a secure and stable local environment for the community to live in safety. FSD’s team reconstructs accommodation, hospitals, schools, roads, utilities infrastructure and enables water access in Bouar for thousands of people to compliment the projection of security across the country.
In the capital, Bangui, FSD’s country headquarter coordinates its actions in support of the peace agreement and the rehabilitation of security infrastructure across the country. This allows the humanitarian rehabilitation projects that FSD completed from 2014 to 2019 to be sustained on a long term basis, with improved government buildings, a working communications infrastructure and transparent human resources management systems in place. Ultimately, FSD’s work helps secure an enduring and sustainable development outcome for Central Africans to finally live in safety and peace.
